Folkearth is an experimental side-project for musicians from different folk metal bands. Its members vary in every album they have recorded so far, and in the third one, “Drakkars in the Mist”, their total number is 30 (thirty) and the countries they came from - 11 (eleven). It turns out that this is a cult combination between musicians from bands such as Yggdrasil, Forefather and Eluveitie. The problem with such kind of experiments is that there is a big risk of disunion in the content of the albums and a feeling of fragmentariness. The members of Folkearth do not see each other often, they compose from a distance, and they do not do any concerts together. These factors definitely have an impact on the quality of their projects, too. In “Drakkars in the Mist” there are interesting ideas invested, but their realization is not so good. Every song lives its own life, separated from the others in the record, and there is a need of several hearings for creating a united notion about the disc. Every one of these 30 musicians has taken part in making the variety of the sounding, but the message happened to be shaken. The instruments used are also varied. That is why every song has its own expression. The re-created moods in the framework of the album are something between happiness and a carefree state of mind represented with folk motifs, and sadness and absorbed feelings created with tough gruff roaring and drum volleys. Folkearth’s idea to get together the best of the folk metal scene in one place is praiseworthy. The realization of their great ideas is not as good as it should be, but making better teamwork between the musicians scattered all around the globe will be in their favor for the next projects.
