I immediately think of three bands sounding almost the same as Månegarm - the next Swedish act related to the popular yet tough job to do their reading of Viking/folk metal. In difference with the young enthusiasts who begin their way on a beaten and almost clear track, Månegarm are not on stage from yesterday and they have created the things in the genre that nowadays’ youngsters are trying to copy in one way or another.
The best in the band’s new album in general is that the calm and optimistic mood in every song is still present. There is a wonderful balance between the mid-to-slow-tempo songs and the ones making your blood boil and your head smash (from pleasure) in a wall.
As typical Swedes, Månegarm insist on their native language - their album and song titles are written in it; so do the lyrics. Musicwise, it is true that in “Vargstenen” there is nothing different from the previous records in spite of the wonderful guitar melodies decorated by the bewitching melody of Janne Liljeqvist’s violin, or the uniform stories made by the percussion. It is also true that the songs sound similar to the stuff created by Finntroll, Korpiklaani and even Einherjer, but it still finds an easy way to the listeners’ consciousness. And although there is a lack of new ideas in the album, we should definitely notice that the band works for its own style and influences the Swedish scene since 1995. Being among the first who dared to experiment in it, they deserve a high rating.
I’m sure this album won’t be heard by many people, because in the long years of their existence Månegarm did not succeed in becoming popular as some of their colleagues. I hope that I’m wrong in this prediction, because “Vargstenen” is full of high-quality music played with the means of expression of the emotional folk metal.
