If there is a genre where things are moving in an interesting direction, it is definitely doom metal. In this case we’re talking about an album of a representative of the genre that it is not popular, but for four years now they’ve been contributing to the development of the style more confident than ever. We know about the bad reputation of France in doom metal, but The Old Dead Tree are one wonderful exception. “The Water Fields” is an eloquent example that we should not strike off the musicians from this country, because such an album is able to set on fire not only your interest, but the fire of your unforged desire to know well its creators’ achievements. I can assure you that they are worth listening to. To be honest, the new songs are not more different than their predecessors, with the difference that they are more powerful, catchy and especially emotional. The melancholic mood is included properly, but without being boring as this happens in the music of the most bands of the genre. The nice shiver while waiting for the next instrumental explosion is really important in the perception of “The Water Fields”. Felicitous are also the vocal parts, overflowing from powerful roar to peaceful humming a-la Jeff Buckley. I can not hide my admiration for this kind of albums. Such incredible teamwork between the musicians and capturing decisions about the compositions should receive prescribed attention. I am sure that The Old Dead Tree will be the next reason for more people to find the beauty of the harder, dark and deep metal sound.
