You should be a bit crazy to listen to this band. This is what everyone who already did believes in. The Mars Volta are becoming an equivalent to everything barmy that modern technologies can turn to sound. With their three albums they confirmed the tendency to separate the listeners - a part of them hates the band, another adores it.
The new album is again with a freaky title, “The Bedlam in Goliath”, and the stories behind the lyrics send us through the history of an old poem about the love triangle between a man, a woman and her daughter. Every song tells us about the different phases of the relationships between these people, and Afro-Caribbean religious beliefs are involved to protect the whole story.
It is really important to say that according to its creators the album had an evil curse on it. They explain how a ritual object, called Ouija, brought bad luck to their recording sessions. Rodriguez-Lopez bought this strange thing as a present for his friend Bixler-Zavala from Jerusalem and that was the beginning of the miseries. After having difficulties with the new songs, they both decided to burn the Ouija board. As you may guess, everything became alright after that and the album was successfully finished.
The music in “The Bedlam in Goliath” is in similar way crazy. Hysterical screaming, electrical noise and a lot of modulations are interlaced in the 12 songs. For the complete sinking in the hysteria of the CD helps its special editions which will unlock different bonuses for some of the fans.
We can’t miss the fact that the single “Wax Simulacra” was really successful, although it’s hard to outline one of the songs from the album. It is important that the cover artwork of “The Bedlam in Goliath” is also brilliant. This is one of the things that make its lunatic creators more and more interesting.
