We would hardly have heard of Teräsbetoni if almost half an year ago they didn’t get to the Eurovision 2008 contest finals to represent Finland. They were actually one of the few great things at that musical circus. They didn’t succeed repeating the great achievement of their compatriots Lordi from 2006, but they represented their country in a wonderful way.
Looking more seriously, the music of Teräsbetoni is not original at all. The guys obviously are big fans of Manowar and the stories about heroes, swords and wars and, in their own way, they are doing their reading of these same themes.
“Myrskyntuoja” (“Stormbringer”) is the third album of the Finnish and they, to a not inconsiderable degree, repeat in it almost all the things created in their previous CDs. In it, logically, is put the hit song, which brought them to Eurovision - “Missä Iiehet ratsastaa” - and if you have already heard it, you won’t be surprised by the rest of the compositions. The genre is near to power metal, but in most of the cases it sounds more as hard rock.
Teräsbetoni are one of the serials that salute their native land and sing in their own language. The Finnish lyrics are really funny, but I can’t deny that at the same time they succeed in adding inspiring elements to the music, although we don’t actually understand what they are about. From the other songs I can show up only “Paha sanoo” with its hymn melody and nice chorus, but after it the feeling that the function “copy-paste” is used a lot is getting stronger.
Teräsbetoni is a new and good band that has gained great success for its 5-year-long history. They still have time to make something much more original and heavier in metal music. In my opinion, the band is better than Lordi and it really deserved a higher position than the 22nd at the finals of the contest I’ve already mentioned. However, we Bulgarians will hardly ever have such a participant in it, so - admirations for the Finnish nation and “Good luck!” to the band!
