Air is such an exact definition of the voice of Anneke Van Giersbergen. The fans of The Gathering know it well. And they have to hear the new band of the singer.
When Anneke decided to quit The Gathering, the news shook up the adorers of the Dutch, but at least there was the promise for a new project and later the same day a MySpace profile of Agua de Annique appeared. For our great delight, the first song that appeared there, “Day After Yesterday” promised much. But hardly someone has imagined exactly how much...
The album “Air” is an undisturbed flight in the spacious talent of Anneke to enchant with her music. Her amazing voice harmonizes with the musical palette and invites you to sink in the calm and deep aguas of Annique. All the songs are beautiful, tender and strong and remind of the previous band of the vocalist (“Trail Of Grief” for example), but they also bear the individual signature of an independent artist, expressed in discreet identity, which makes them sound even warmer and more inmost.
Maybe the project's name is not so randomly picked, because Anneke really is at home in Agua de Annique. The coziness and the sincere sound of the songs confirm it thirteen times, with every single composition. Tranquil, melancholic, delicate, engrossing and frank, they take away the needless burden of the everyday problems and embrace the listener in the unnamable musical comfort.
There is something really reassuring in this CD. The resemblance with The Gathering is big enough not to worry that the parting the ways of the singer with the band would deprive us of the musical direction of their last albums, and yet the songs are strong enough by their own to find personal favourites and separate favorite moments in each of them. So much beauty, soft, almost alternative impressions, a little saxophone as a luxury and even a pinch of post rock is what Anneke gives away, and the gift is among the most precious.
