The music of Annie Lennox is like wine - during the years it becomes richer and nicer. It sounds like cliché, but it is true, because the songs in her new album revel, decanting in the crystal glass of the emotion - strong, rotund and influencing. Obviously 30 years on stage are an indicator for talent in serious proportions. “Songs of Mass Destruction” does not examine political nor anti-war themes, as the title may confuse you. The lyrics reflect a harmed spirit, a crumbled inner-world, a new hope, in short - nice verses for nice songs. The moods are wonderfully balanced between the dark, sensual ballads and the vivid pop-rock compositions with dominating piano and lively, hearted rhythm. Annie has always been skilled both in slow and fast songs and manages to draw deep and dark shades in the background of the compositions. Nevertheless if she shares with the tender and touching “Dark Road”, logically released also as a first single and video for the album, or confesses a militant road of life with the rhythmical “Ghost in My Machine”, she always sounds true and sincere. And skillfully weaves tiny musical coulours into the composing so the songs provoke tickling, show signature and express emotions, making you reach again and again for the offered audio temptation. Once it is blues rhythm with a persistently-jolly chorus (“Love Is Blind”), another time it is the discrete accordion (“Ghost in My Machine”), or the melody on the synthesizer caught the spirit of the late Eurythmics (“Coloured Bredspread). The modern gospel hymn “Sing” yet is another song by a big artist in help for the war against AIDS. In it Annie relies on the support of other 23 world-known female singers like Madonna, Dido, Céline Dion and Fergie. Didn’t I tell you that she knows how to make hits! Without being a revolutionary record, “Songs of Mass Destruction” will be appraised by fans of the serious pop scene. This album by Annie Lennox is the next proof that she is “the greatest white soul singer alive".
