When was the last time when you played a new album and with dropped jaw found out that every single song grams your heart and becomes your favorite… until you hear the next one? When was the last time when after the first listening to an hour of new music, totally by intuition you have reached out to play the CD from the start? When was the last time you felt strong, really strong from the swooping blast of the music you are listening to? If it is hard for you to remember, give the new album of Vrani Volosa a try.
Five years after they took us “Where the heart burns”, Vrani Volosa finally released as a record (a great looking digipack in A5 format) their new songs which we know from the sporadic gigs of the Burgas band with their renewed line up of five people. Five hearts, five souls, devoted to the storm of the strong and inspiring music. And if they used to ride the foam of the raging element, now the band has taken off the “black” clothes of its pagan black metal and the stripped to nerves and primeval strength songs grab you to take you to the roots of a pure valour, of ancient power.
Slow, heavy and deep, the ten blows off “Heresy/Ерес” land down as tidal waves, drowning and tossing you to leave you breathless and purified on the rocky shore. It is not a naked metaphor. Play the CD, turn the volume high and feel with your heart the pagan atmosphere of “Heresy”, recall the “Exiles” by Yavorov in the beginning of the panting „Слънце” (“Sun”). Lay down in the bosom of the chanting “All to Ash” and stare at the dawn over the battlefield in the echoing prayer of “The Rising Red”. Raise your chest and face the wavy, floating melody of “Rivalry”, before you sink in the ten-minutes long, scenting of post-rock “We Are Not Alone In Our Universe”, running over in its end into lively folklore tune. You cannot keep from singing along the choruses, so pure and strong, can you?
The voice of Hristo tells stories, praises and awakens ardour. The vocals in the whole album are clean and serene, singing songs for the elements, for brave warriors, for sea people, for battles, blood and honor. And the music… epic without pompousness, strong, without excessive colours, raw but distinct, pagan but not black… It stores the band’s signature, the familiar thrills of the debut but now takes them to another level. The clever drumming transitions pass from the slow and deep pulse to the thundering rhythm of the high-speed passages, led by the guitars who ease the reins for the next beautiful melody. Magic and honesty for which in another ages you would have been burnt at the stake. It’s a heresy!
