Alan Wilder started Recoil in the 80’s as a not that much of a commercial side project. Since he parted ways with Depeche Mode in 1995, he somehow began to vanish in the underground reminding people about himself with his solo releases.
Recently he spoke in an interview for Tangra Mega Rock (check it out among the Interviews on our website) that he loves blues music since he was a child and thus he decided to put those influences in a more direct way in his new album, entitled “subHuman” and composed of songs that are “just about human conditions... It's quite sad at times."
Wilder looked for a blues singer to add this specific feeling over the cold electro soundscapes, and with the help of the Internet he came across Joe Richardson from New Orleans. Since the album “Bloodline” this is the very first time to reach the standard song structure. Richardson adds a lot of melody in “subHuman” with his guitars, authentic blues vocals and harmonica, which gives the album this classic feeling. For example, take that “99 to Life” song, based on a true story. And those more dreamy and trippy vocal lines belong to Carla Trevaskis, who used to work with members of Eurythmics and Portishead.
To put it short, after seven years of silence, Alan Wilder presents his new dose of dark and melancholic half-frozen soundscapes. Doubtlessly, “subHuman” will remain as one of the most prominent releases of this year.
