Here comes the next punch by the devilish furies from The City of Angels! A powerful introduction with the opener “Not All Who Wander Are Lost”, however the full potential of the album doesn’t unfold until the next one, “Clouds Over California”. We get hit by twisting and rasping guitars in both the lower and higher spectrum, as well as an endless wave of rhythm and double-bass on the drums. Add a few beautiful solos and a short element of suspense in some of the songs, and there you have it - an extraordinary background to the voice of Dez Fafara (ex-Coal Chamber), which fits in perfectly. When it comes to the lyrics, one might say words just fall in their places, supported by the melody. A more specific impression is given by “Horn of Betrayal” where the association with the Horn of the Apocalypse won’t escape anyone’s attention, and “Tirades of Truth” where the ups and downs in the tempo are well combined with the power of the instruments, which gives the song an additional emotional strike. Only the half-hidden piano in the distortion of “When Summoned” and some other tracks is at first slightly awkward, but later on - intriguing. The quality of sound is anything but surprising when it comes to DevilDriver’s latest offspring. It just lives up to our expectations. They might have slightly softened up the sound, but that would be noticed only by some die-hard fans. Nevertheless, “The Last Kind Words” shouldn’t go unnoticed.
