Gary Holt & Co. deliver another lesson in violence - there’s no doubt about it. Don’t expect any kind of modern sounding or lame stuff from the new album. It is exactly the dose of extreme, honest and straightforward aggression that Exodus have been making since the now distant year of 1980. "The Atrocity Exhibition...” sounds pretty much just like “Tempo of the Damned” and “Shovel Headed Kill Machine” (being with Rob Dukes behind the mic again). This is of course not without the aid of Andy Sneap’s always the same sounding production. The dude has found the way to make perfectly sounding albums and there’s no reason for him not to stick to it. The other thing is that Exodus is a classic band that ought to sound the classic way. So - there are no surprises. And this is how it should be! If a band like this starts exploring some kind of new musical horizons just now, it will be their loss. Everyone knows what happened to all the classic thrash bands who tried to play something else in the 90’s - tons of failures, then reunions, returns to the roots… If your roots are in tearing heads with super heavy riffs and pouring insane amounts of aggression, there is no point in ever leaving them, though. Just listen to the intro of “Funeral Hymn” and you’ll get what it is all about. There is also an angry anti-religious song, “Children of a Worthless God”, where somehow some clean singing in the chorus sneaks in. Most of the songs are long - over 6 minutes - and really diverse and enjoyable music wise, without straying from the thrash canons at all. As a whole, Exodus do well what they’ve always done well, so there should be no disappointed guys. And, as a fan wrote on an Internet board after just hearing the album, “The new material is so heavy they’ll have to hire an extra crew just to carry the setlist!”
