Bearing in mind that ‘Hellbilly Deluxe’ is my favourite Zombie album, I, for one, was quite happy for its audio "sequel" to sound similar and it mostly does. Although it has to be said this one has a less mechanized/electronic feel to it as opposed to a more organic approach, which may be down to the fact that Rob decided to involve his current touring band in the recording process more thoroughly. As we all know this album was already completed in 2008, but its release was held back for quite a while until Zombie finished directing and promoting ‘Halloween II’. Well now that we've got it, let's enjoy it for what it is - a classic Rob Zombie album. That's right, you won't find any groundbreaking stuff here and if you're familiar with Rob's previous works, you won't be too surprised, but then again, you won't be disappointed either. We have the usual classic grandiose Zombie horror rock'n'roll, complete with film samples, werewolf/vampire/zombie themes, Russ Meyer/Cramps/Lugosi/Karloff lyrical imagery and b-horror comic book songtitles such as ‘Werewolf Women of the SS’. We have the beats, the groove, the raping guitars and Rob's growly voice which is, at times, somewhat "cleaner". And, of course, ample sprinkilings of "yeah" and "motherfucker", in case you forget you're listening to a Rob Zombie record. The artwork is the customary classy job and if Rob's words that this will be his last physical release are true, then true music afficionados are well advised to purchase either the CD or vinyl version of this rather good new album from the Zombie vaults.
