When The Cult got back together in 2006, I was almost sure that we are witnessing the next reunion of forgotten rock greats.
But ‘Born Into This’ disproved me loud and smartly. A year later, Ian Astbury said that his group will no longer record albums. Only that last month they released ‘Choice Of Weapon’, which is even more powerful than its predecessor. From now on I will keep quiet and listen to the music!
‘Honey from a Knife’ races the album straight into the great rock’n’roll party and doesn’t let you go for the next 41 minutes (or an hour, depending on which edition of the CD you have). The Cult is from the very few bands that put out one of their strongest albums when the people in the band are close to their fifties (remember the beast Monster Magnet released in 2010) and they seem to live a second powerful rock wave. I wonder how they do it so well...
“We got the drugs, we got the drugs, the drugs in here”. Now let’s have a look at the producers’ team: Rob Rock (The Cult, Metallica, Bon Jovi, etc.) and Chris Goss (Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age…). A-ha-a, that’s how!
I don’t want to enter in the details of each song. The tracks in ‘Choice Of Weapon’ are pumped with the same kind of rock we receive from the British since the mid 80’s – slightly gothic, easy to party, nicely serene and really catchy.
There are songs for headbanging (‘Lucifer’), there are jolly jumps (‘For the Animals’), there are beautiful ballads балади (‘Life > Death’), there is also liturgical epic (‘A Pale Horse’). And most of all – there is a massive dose of rock and roll of forever great band.
