Prepare for seducing despair. The songs enter smoothly, softly and stick like sweet poison in the veins – slow,  deceptively gentle and painfully affecting. Coming after almost lethal for Josh stay in a hospital and a long period of hiatus, the tracks in ‘…Like Clockwork’ have concentrated every creative irritant, passing through the heart and the head of the frontman.

As he himself shares: “Rather than control the direction of the recordings, we decided to ride shotgun on our emotional bandwagon. We embraced our evil, held the horrible, licked the lunacy and blew the beautiful.”
 
Having clashed with his personal nightmares, Josh Homme gathers again QOTSA with the idea that if they are to record, they’ll have to face their fears. With a little help from some friends.

For the first time since ‘Songs For The Deaf’ besides the band members, we have under the QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE banner also Dave Grohl, Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan. And a few guests more, including Elton John and Trent Reznor.

But this time we are far from the heavy fuzz of the third album of the band. The fast songs are two, the cheerful ones even less. And without being washy melancholic,  ‘…Like Clockwork’ easily lets you confused with your own sorrow and without directions.

The album is lunatic wandering through a mescaline trip in the disfigured wasteland of post-apocalyptic sci-fi, directed by Tarantino and Rodriguez, under the commands of Josh Homme.

It is not by chance that from the band they aired one after another animated movies, remaining at the same time of that bloody-desert manga ‘Afro Samurai’ and the comic books ‘Sin City’.

Not by chance then QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE assembled the five movies of the British artist Boneface (author also of the cover art) in thick melodic audio-visual nightmare. And if you haven’t watched it yet, go to www.likeclockwork.tv.

Actually, it is quite easy to imagine this album to be used as a soundtrack of eventual full-length movie or animation on the comic books, based on Stephen King’s ‘Dark Tower’ series. Despair, madness, death, love, blood in the lungs.

If in their early albums, the music of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE or KYUSS burned with the heated of the sun desert sand and the guitars scratched the ears with cactus riffs, in ‘…Like Clowckwork’ the desert is drowned into night chill.

And is full of ghosts.
