Finnish producer, mixing engineer and recording engineer Mikko Karmila has died at the age of 62. Born on February 3rd, 1964 in Lohja, Finland, Karmila was one of the most influential behind-the-scenes figures in Finnish rock and metal music.
During his lengthy career, Karmila worked on more than 300 albums and became particularly well known for his work at Helsinki’s legendary Finnvox Studios.
His production, recording and mixing credits span an enormous number of Finnish rock and metal releases. Over the decades, Karmila worked with artists including AMORPHIS, NIGHTWISH, CHILDREN OF BODOM, STRATOVARIUS, SONATA ARCTICA, KOTITEOLLISUUS, NORTHER, WALTARI, TAROT, CHARON, LORDI, STONE, PEER GÜNT, DON HUONOT and IMPALED NAZARENE.
A key figure behind the rise of Finnish metal
Karmila’s work became particularly prominent during the international rise of Finnish metal in the late 1990s and early 2000s. During that period, he worked extensively on releases issued through Spinefarm Records, helping shape the sound of numerous albums that introduced Finnish metal bands to audiences around the world.
His work became so recognisable that terms such as the “Mikko Karmila sound” and “Finnvox sound” were sometimes used to describe it. Karmila himself took a more modest view, emphasising that his role was to achieve the sound sought by the bands and record labels he worked with.
Karmila also maintained a particularly long working relationship with Finnish metal band KOTITEOLLISUUS. Over the years, he contributed to the band’s albums as a producer, recording engineer, mixing engineer, arranger and musician. As recently as 2024, he produced, recorded and mixed the band’s “Susirajalla” album.
In addition to his extensive studio career, Karmila was a musician himself and played in bands including ITÄ-SAKSA and MOON CAKES.
