Bob Dylan Offers Stamp of Approval for Timothée Chalamet-Led Biopic

Bob Dylan has offered his thoughts on the upcoming film A Complete Unknown, which hits theaters this Christmas, taking to Twitter to express his excitement for the biopic and Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet’s starring role.

There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!),” he said in the post. “Timothée Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me.”

A Complete Unknown was directed by James Mangold, whose credits include Walk the Line, the Johnny Cash biopic for which Reese Witherspoon won Best Supporting Actress at The Oscars for her role as June Carter Cash. With such an extensive and iconic career to explore, Mangold used a 2015 book about Dylan as his jumping-off point for the film, zeroing in on a specific period in the early ’60s.

The film’s taken from Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric — a book that came out in 2015,” Dylan continued in his post. “It’s a fantastic retelling of events from the early ‘60s that led up to the fiasco at Newport. After you’ve seen the movie, read the book.”

Last year, it was revealed that Dylan personally offered Mangold notes for the project, which were then passed to the notoriously diligent Chalamet as he worked to authentically portray Dylan onscreen.

Chalamet appears alongside co-stars Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, and Nick Offerman as Alan Lomax. Plus, find a clip of Chalamet singing “Subterranean Homsick Blues” below.
