R.I.P. Solomon Burke

Legendary soul singer Solomon Burke died at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport early Sunday. He was 70.

The Associated Press reports Burke was on a plane from Los Angeles and was due to play at a club in Amsterdam on Tuesday. The cause of death is not yet known.

Burke, who was both a Grammy winner and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, wrote a number of 60’s biggest hits, including ‘Everybody Needs Somebody To Love’ and ‘Cry To Me’.

His more recent successes included the 2002 Grammy album Don’t Give Up on Me, which featured compositions from Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Tom Waits, and Van Morrison. It won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
