Rock Landmark Chelsea Hotel for Sale

It’s the New York hotel where Sid Vicious killed girlfriend Nancy Spungen and where Bob Dylan wrote ‘Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands’.

Over the years, The Chelsea Hotel is where numerous artists – including superstar musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison – spent time. And now, it’s up for sale, according to Reuters.

The three families who have owned the hotel for the past 65 years have not named an asking price and are confident that the Chelsea will remain friendly to struggling artists.

“The history itself makes the hotel what it is,” said spokesman, Loren Riegelhaupt. “Anybody who’s going to be looking to buy the Chelsea knows that the Chelsea is the Chelsea, and there’s nothing you want to do to change what the Chelsea is.”

The Chelsea, built in 1883, features 12 floors and 250 hotel rooms, which are currently split between permanent residences and spaces for transient guests.

The hotel isn’t just known for its rock star clientele, writers such as Arthur Clarke, Thomas Wolfe and Arthur Miller stayed at the Chelsea, as did artist Andy Warhol.

“Now it is time to let a new owner, with perhaps some new innovative ideas and resources, to re-energize and revitalize the Chelsea,” said Paul Brounstein, a shareholder and board member, in a statement.
