SHELLAC’s Rules

As you already know, Steve Albini and his band Shellac shall play live in Bulgaria for the first time ever next Monday, May 12. The event is scheduled to take place at the Backstage Club in Sofia, and here’s what the group pointed out as some rules for the show:

“Shellac doesn’t have a fancy rider or a (production) manager who loves to be difficult. Shellac likes things to be simple, honest and back to the basics, it’s all about the audience and the artist having the great show. To help, Shellac has compiled a couple of rules that are very important to them. The list is here as a result of playing (and visiting) shows for more than two decades.

  • no barrier/barricade
  • no guest list
  • no press list
  • no photo pass – anybody can take photos from the audience (nobody onstage or backstage)
  • no audio recording, videotaping, webcasting, radio broadcast by patrons or by the venue
  • no fancy screen printed poster that is for sale.”

Bass player Bob Weston added:

  • “We will have t-shirts on this trip (we normally do not). What we do is: After we play, Steve and I sit on the stage and sell shirts to the kids. So we need to let the promoters know that we want people to be able to stay near the stage for at least 30 minutes after the show in order to talk with us, meet and/or buy shirts. We can’t have the bouncers yelling and trying to kick everybody out the minute we finish playing.”
